Preschool Class | Weekdays

Research has shown that young children make sense of the world around through active play. At The Tinker Yard, children are allowed to have all the space and time they need to work on their ideas. Teachers act as facilitators rather than instructors. We carefully observe children at play and use those observations to support children in representing their ideas through their preferred learning style(s).

PLAY at THE TINKER YARD is a mixed age preschool class that is natural, child-led, unhurried and respectful of needs of children. The curriculum is built upon principles of RIE, Playwork and the Reggio Emilia approach.

Curriculum at The Tinker Yard is built upon principles of RIE, Playwork and the Reggio Emilia approach. We trust children and hold a strong view of children being competent, curious, full of knowledge, potential, and interested in connecting to the world around them.

Children are respected as capable and competent learners. They are empowered to take ownership of their learning while getting adequate support by our teachers. In planning the curriculum, we draw inspiration from observations made of children. Curriculum is framed by big ideas that children have and aligned with early childhood frameworks.

We take great effort to create a culture of trust, care, empathy, support and collaboration in our class community (children, families and teachers). This is achieved through our practice of respectful and mindful teaching. We aim to give children a space where they can discover, embrace and build upon their natural strengths and construct knowledge through experiential play.

Parents are valued partners in the children's education. The Tinker Yard keeps an open door policy and communication with parents. Children's learning stories are regularly shared with parents through an online platform. Parents have secure, convenient and easy access to these learning stories through their mobile devices.

For the longest time, I was searching for an activity class for my 2.5 year old in the East. I finally found The Tinker Yard and my daughter loves it. It provides a calm and relaxing environment and encourages uninterrupted play which I love. I feel like it has helped my daughter benefit from the small group setting and the gentle approach Alyna uses to work with the children. It has helped her with language development and social skills and encouraged a lot of creativeness. And it's fun!!! Highly recommend!

I really appreciate the efforts in creating thislove space for children to explore and discover. Other than messy play, there are plently of naturally made/sourced objects for children to create with. Definitely a great break from the usual battery-operated and over stimluating toys! Taking time for self-directed play is so important for young children especially those living in the city. Looking forward to more time time spent at The Tinker Yard!

There are very little play spaces in Singapore where children are allowed to be themselves, to make some mess and to represent their ideas/thoughts through different available materials. My 3 year old loves using the open ended and recycled materials to build things and my 7 year old loves doing pretend play, dough play and also inventing anything with loose parts and a glue gun. The only place in town where they can sit engrossed for 4 hours straight and is still reluctant to go home after despite being hungry!

Classes run twice, thrice or daily on weekdays. The class size is kept small at 8 children. Programme hours are 9.30am to 12.30pm or 3.30pm to 5.30pm. Teachers take on the role of facilitators.

Children who stay with us for their entire preschool years will be equipped with skills, values and knowledge that would carry them through challenges. They would have all that they need to be successful in what they do AND more importantly, have a happy childhood.

  • We do not make children sit for long periods of time against their will.
  • We do not compel children to work on tasks that they have lost interest in.
  • We do not use a top-down approach in our interactions with children.
  • We do not do time-outs or punishments.
  • We do not use the thematic approach that is overly structured and teacher-directed and allows little or no room for children's voices to be heard.
  • We do not believe in hothousing children.
  • We do not view children as needing to be fixed.

Trial sessions are available to give parents and children first-hand experience of our programme.  Places available for trial sessions is limited and need to be pre-booked. Please check in with us to arrange for trial sessions.
